IBM 워킹맘들을 위해, 모유를 배달하다!

IBM announced on Monday it would begin offering a breast milk delivery service for employees who are also working mothers. The new program will allow women traveling on business to ship their expressed breast milk back to their homes free of cost.

미국 IT회사 IBM은 지난 월요일, 워킹맘들을 위해 모유 배달 서비스를 시행한다고 밝혔다. 이 새 프로그램은 출장 중인 여성 직원들의 모유를 가정에 무료로 배달해준다.

Traveling while breastfeeding can be quite complicated. Breast milk has a very short shelf life and, unless frozen, it will spoil after a few days. Career women might have to resort to traveling with a carry-on cooler as breast milk also needs to be chilled if it’s going to be outside of a fridge or freezer for more than four hours. And sometimes, even airport policies can be unaccommodating for lactating mothers: In April, Alyssa Milano tweeted her outrage when security at Heathrow Airport removed ten ounces of her breastmilk as she was coming back from vacation.

출장중에 모유수유를 하는 것은 굉장히 힘들다. 모유는 냉동된 상태가 아닌 경우 그 보존이 어렵고  며칠이 지나면 상하기 때문이다.  모유는 4시간 이상 상온에 있을 경우 냉동된 상태거나 냉장고에서 저온 상태로 있어야 하기 때문에 출장중인 커리어 우먼들은 개인용 보냉박스를 가지고 있어야 했다. 심지어 공항 정책역시 모유 수유 중인 여성들에게 불친절하다. 지난 4월 알리시아 밀라노는 런던 히드로 공항 직원에게 10온스나 되는 그녀의 모유를 회수당한 적이 있다. (히드로 공항에서는 아이와 동행하지 않은 한, 모유를 가지고 다닐 수 없다고 설명했다)

IBM appears to be the first company to offer this specific perk for working moms. The express delivery service is part of its initiative to attract and retain top female talent in the industry. Many tech corporations are prioritizing female-friendly policies as of late and are providing lucrative incentives such as generous paid leave and expanded coverage for expensive fertility procedures. IBM currently offers six weeks of paid maternity leave, while Google offers up to eighteen. And last year, Apple and Facebook became the first companies to start covering egg-freezing procedures for its employees. How long until other industries start taking note?

IBM은 워킹맘들을 위한 특별한 특전을 제공한 첫 회사가 될 것 같다. 이런 특급배송서비스는 업계의 뛰어난 여성 인재들을 본인의 회사에 모셔오고 퇴사하게 하지 않기 위한 서비스 중의 하나이다. 실제 많은 회사에서는 최근 여성우호정책들을 내세우고 있으며 그 중에는 유급휴가는 물론, 고가의 불임클리닉을 보험으로 처리해주기도 한다. IBM은 현재 유급 출산휴가로 6주를 주고 있다(구글은 18주로 늘렸다). 작년에는 애플과 페이스북은 '냉동 난자 절차'역시  보험으로 처리해주고 있다. 다른 산업에서 이를 주목하기 시작하기 까지 어느 정도 걸릴 까?
